The main aim of Physiotherapy is to enable a child to experience success with gross motor ability and therefore participate as fully as possible at home, in school and when playing with friends and family.

Physiotherapy supports children who have a variety of conditions including:

  • Children born with evident motor problems of neurological origin e.g. cerebral palsy

  • Young children who are later than their peers to develop gross motor skills such as sitting, standing, walking, jumping etc.

  • Children who have co-ordination difficulties which affects participation with their friends, family and at school e.g  developmental coordination disorder

  • Organising and sequencing movement e.g. dyspraxia

  •  Joint hypermobility syndrome

  • Global developmental delay

  • Children with motor difficulties related to a genetic condition

  • Children who need to build up strength and stamina including following illness or periods of immobility.

Following the initial assessment to identify the areas that need addressing I will discuss these with you, and we can plan together how these might be met e.g. direct physiotherapy, devising of a programme to be delivered at home and/or school. Sometimes, onward referral may be indicated e.g. Paediatrician / Occupational therapy / SALT / Orthotist.

Children’s physiotherapy uses exercises, play activities and games to improve motor ability. In addition, specialist equipment may be used.

It is important that physiotherapy sessions are supplemented across the week at home and/or in school by specific activities which will be advised.

I will ask your permission to liaise closely with other therapists, teaching staff and medical personnel who may be involved with your child.
